Imagine that you’re my interviewer and I’m your interviewee ❓ - an interviewer 👩 - an interviewee ❓ What is your name? 👩 I am Daria! ❓ How old are you? 👩 I am 21. ❓ Where are you from, Daria? 👩 I am from Moscow, Russia. ❓ Do you keep living in Moscow? 👩 No, I moved from Russia when I was 18. I’ve lived for 2,5 years in Argentina. And then spontaneously I relocated to Armenia. That’s where I’m living now. ❓ What are you doing in Armenia? 👩 I am teaching languages online. I’ve been an English tutor for +3 years and a Russian tutor for +2 years. ❓ And how many languages do you speak? 👩 I speak 3 languages: Russian, English, and Spanish. And I am going to learn so much more. Languages are my passion. ❓ Are you passionate about languages because you’re talented to learn them? 👩 I believe that everyone could learn a foreign language just like everyone learns to speak their native language. It is NOT about “being good enough” to learn languages, it is about the methods one uses. ❓ What methods do you use? 👩 The natural approach method. It is based on the Language Acquisition Theory that was developed by linguist and University of California professor Stephen Krashen. ❓ How does this method work? 👩 It is very similar to the process you underwent as a kid when you acquired your first language. This method requires meaningful interaction in the target language – natural communication. It’s different from the traditional methods of learning a language. ❓ How different is the natural approach method from the traditional language learning methods? 👩 The first is ‘acquisition’. It’s a subconscious and intuitive process of constructing the system of a language. It’s based on meaningful communication. Traditional learning, on the other hand, is a conscious process that results in conscious knowledge ‘about’ the language, for example, knowledge of grammar rules. ❓ Ok, and why do you choose the natural approach method instead of traditional methods of learning? 👩 Learning is a teacher-centered and deductive way of studying. Language acquisition is a natural student-centered approach. It focuses on the student’s experience with the language. Stephen Krashen noted that, over time, the results were more effective. And I myself believe language acquisition is a more effective approach because it led me to fluency in English and Spanish. ❓ So, how are you going to guide me? 👩 In our classes, we’ll focus on… ✅ meaningful communication We’ll talk about things that really MATTER to you. Result: you’re fully engaged when we speak and gain more and more confidence to express your thoughts in English. ✅ comprehensible input By comprehensible input, I mean reading and listening to content in English that satisfies 2 important criteria: 1) it’s SO interesting that you CAN’T WAIT to read & listen in English more 2) the level of the language you’re exposed to is slightly higher than your own language level Comprehensible input has many long-term benefits. In fact, young children have the same approach with their first language. They pay attention to tones, sounds, and grammatical structures before they ever begin speaking. And they only start repeating them when they’re ready. We’re going to do the same in English! Result: you fall in LOVE with the process of acquiring English, expand your vocabulary and unconsciously increase your understanding of the language, exposure to structures, collocations, grammatical orders, and so forth through reading and listening ✅ pronunciation & accent We’ll analyze and develop your pronunciation & accent by using the techniques that made me sound like a native American speaker Result: you sound natural and feel confident while speaking English CLASSROOM RULES ❗ In the class, we speak English and only English ❗ If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, you have to let me know at least 4 hours before it.
